The Teel Technologies Vehicle Forensics course provides digital forensic investigators with a comprehensive education of advanced data extraction techniques for vehicle navigation and infotainment systems, as well as other electronic control units found in vehicles.
This course was developed with the ever-changing field of digital forensics in mind. No longer can we rely on commercial tools and automated processes. Now more than ever, it is important to be able to use advanced extraction methods for unsupported and damaged vehicles.
Through a combination of lectures and hands on practicals, students will learn advanced data extraction methods to acquire data from vehicles and vehicle ECUs.
The course curriculum was developed by our instructors who are experienced digital forensics professionals who practice these skills on a daily basis.
This course is broken down into several instructional modules that focus on various topics, proper techniques, and advanced skills for extracting data from vehicles.
You Will Be Able To:
- Use advanced data extraction methods to acquire data from vehicles and vehicle electronic controls units, as well as vehicle key fobs.

Prerequisites
- Basic understanding of automated data extractions from vehicles
- General digital forensic skills is preferred, but not required
- Prior microsoldering experience is recommended, but not required
- Comfort level in working with printed circuit boards
- Patience and a strong desire to learn

Day 1 Overview

- In-System programming data extraction process
Day 2 Overview
- Reading memory via ISP
- Using Kali Linux
- Recognizing QNX file systems
Day 3 Overview
- Chip removal and reattachment process
- Reading memory with a programmer
Day 4 Overview

Day 5 Overview
- Unsupported vehicles
Evaluation Procedures:
Students will be asked to complete several practical exercises that will provide the instructor with an idea of their understanding of the course material. No formal exam will be given. All students receive a certificate of completion.

- You must have admin rights or have the admin password for software installation.

Meet the Course Creator

Maggie Gaffney is a nationally recognized digital forensics expert, instructor, and curriculum developer with over three decades of law enforcement and forensic experience. She currently serves as director of services and senior instructor at Teel Technologies, where she develops and teaches advanced courses in embedded hardware forensics, mobile device acquisition, vehicle forensics, UAV forensics, SQLite analysis, chip-off/chip-on, ISP, JTAG, and board level repair.
A former Massachusetts State Police Trooper and Computer Crimes Investigator, Maggie has conducted thousands of forensic examinations, testified as an expert witness in federal and state courts, and holds extensive certifications across mobile, hardware, and software forensics, including FAA Remote Pilot certification for UAV investigations.
